Presidents' Day

Fun with our Presidents

As mid-February rolled around, we took some time to learn some new facts about two of our favorite presidents...Abe & George, of course.  Although we already knew quite a bit about them, we read some fun stories that gave us some new information.  Before reading the stories, we discussed facts that we already knew.  Then after reading, we added new facts to our list.  We used these lists to practice writing three sentence paragraphs.

Busy writers!  You can see the wheels turning as they construct their paragraphs!  What fantastic thinkers and writers!

As the munchkins finished writing (or if they just needed a break from it for a while) they were able to work on a couple of coloring pages.  One was General George Washington, which looked almost exactly like a picture of him in the story we read:  George Washington and the General's Dog.  The other was Abe.  Not many colors needed for that one...black and, well...black!

Check out these amazing finished products!

"Abe was a president.  He did not like slavery.  He is in the civil war."

"George Washington was our president.  He liked dogs. He fought in the revolution.  He was a caring person."

After a morning of such hard work, we had a bit of fun in the afternoon.  We decided to use the images of Abe and George (on the penny and the quarter) to learn a bit about probability.  We called it chance!  All the munchkins made predictions about what might happen if we tossed our coins 10 times.

What kind of results would we get?
Would there be more heads or more tails?
Would the tosses end up equal?
Would girls toss differently than boys?
Would the quarter toss differently than the penny?

Then we paired up to test our predictions.  One partner tossed a penny.  The other tossed a quarter.  Each munchkin tossed 10 times and tallied the results on a recording sheet!

 Toss...

Tally...

Toss...

Tally!

Our results surprised the munchkins.  Almost all of us ended up with equal tallies.  We did have one munchkin, however, that tossed all tails!  What are the chances of that!

Then there was another surprise for the munchkins...a recipe on a Friday!
We had lots of fun making an American flag snack in honor of Presidents' Day.

Carefully following the recipe...

Then eating!

Hope you all enjoyed your Presidents' Day!

Until next time...
Giggles,
Mrs. D.
