A Visit from Santa

Ho! Ho! Ho!

What a surprise we all had when first grade invited us to visit their classroom and, what do you know...Santa showed up!

We all enjoyed getting our pictures taken with our jolly visitor!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Until next time...

Feast of St. Lucy

Learning About Lucy

We had another lovely day to learn about another lovely December saint:
St. Lucy.

The munchkins loved the story of St. Lucy and they enjoyed coloring a pretty coloring page.  Probably the most fun, however, was the St. Lucy crowns.  By the time we were done, everyone was so absolutely filled with light and love!

Our Lady of Guadalupe

St. Juan & Our Lady

After hearing the wonderful story of St. Juan, the munchkins did a wonderful job of recreating the vision of Our Lady as seen by him.

Then the munchkins added them to paper tilmas.

Adding tissue roses was the finishing touch!

Happy Feast of St. Juan Diego!

The Feast of St. Nick

Here Comes Good St. Nick

December is such a great time of year!  It's filled with so many wonderful feast days.

Well...this is where we started!

The Feast of St. Nicholas

We learned all about this wonderful bishop and had such fun making all sorts of crafts to help us remember his life & devotion to Christ.

We filled "stockings" with "golden coins".

We colored a beautiful image of the saint...looking much like the beloved Santa Claus!

We adorned ourselves with miters in his honor.

And then we shared a special yummy treat!

St. Nicholas, pray for us!

Until next time...

Christ the King

Hail, Jesus, You're My King

Before we could prepare for the new beginning of Advent, we had to say goodbye to the passing of another church year as we celebrated Christ the King Sunday.  What a great opportunity to get out the liturgical calendar in our classroom Atrium and discuss the church year.  It was a great reminder of all the liturgical colors (especially as we discussed what color Father's vestment was on this particular Sunday...Many argued it was orange!!) and a great way to predict what we will begin to see next Sunday as we enter the season of Advent.

Our activities included a coloring page of Our King, which we bedecked and bejeweled.  The munchkins loved it!

The finished products were lovely!

This particular activity led to a great language exercise, discussing the special sound of "ing"...as in "king".

The munchkins got the chance to practice using this new combination of letters in a quick writing activity.  Boy, do we have some great kindergarten writers!
Be sure to click on each one to get a closer look at the exceptional handwriting, conventional spelling and artwork of our munchkins.  They do a great job.  Who would expect this was done independently by 5 year olds??

Well...I guess we should know that things wouldn't be complete (not in this classroom anyway) unless there was a recipe!

We made crowns for The King.

But many of the munchkins tried them on...
Oh my!  Are those cupcake sprinkles in your hair?

Some even stayed...

Hail, Jesus, You're my King!
Your life frees me to sing!
I will praise You all my days!
You are perfect in every way!

Hail, Hail, Lion of Judah!
How wonderful You are!

Until next time...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Give Thanks to the Lord!

(For all the little turkeys in your life!)

We were a small gang of turkeys, as the germs have crept their way into kindergarten just in time for the holiday.  Yuk!  But the munchkins that were healthy had a great few days to fill our room with "turkeys everywhere" (quite literally as you can see!)...

I know I count each one of them among my blessings!

Until next time...

A Salute to Our Vets

Veteran's Day Celebration

This year our Student Council organized the Second Annual Veteran's Day Breakfast for area veterans.  Last year's breakfast was a huge success and it seems to be a new tradition for our school, our parish, and our community.

This year, not only did the Kindergarten munchkins create many of the decorations and gifts for the event, but many of them were able to attend the Sunday celebration as part of the entertainment!   It was a wonderful way to remember those who have served our country and honor those currently doing so.  We are so very blessed!

We introduced this topic by reading a BIG book titled: I Am Lucky!
This was a great easy reader that focused on symbols of our country and how lucky we are to be American.

After discussing the story and talking all about veterans, each munchkin created two cards.  One card was sent to disabled and hospitalized vets at an area hospital.  (Thanks to our second grade teacher, Ms. M, for organizing that outreach).  The other card was put in a gift bag for one of the vets that attended the our breakfast.

The gift bags also included gifts from all the kids in our school.  Our kindergarten class had a great day, dedicated only to our veterans, in which they created all sorts of wonderful gifts.

We made red, shite and blue stars.

We made beautifully decorated picture frames (complete with a picture!).

And we made cute kitchen magnets.

The Veteran's Breakfast Celebration itself was a huge success thanks to the hard work of our Junior High Student Council and its sponsor.  The families that attended enjoyed fantastic service, a wonderful breakfast and fun entertainment.

The kindergarten munchkins and their first grade friends completely looked the part!

And they were absolutely adorable parading around the gym, waving their flags and singing
"I'm American".

Many of the other classes entertained the crowd as well.

Second grade signed to the song "America the Beautiful" while the fourth grade played along on their recorders.

The fourth grade also sang The Pledge of Allegiance.

And our student council president also addressed the attendees.

It was a wonderful day, both for our students and for the many veterans that were remembered and honored for their service to our country.

May God Bless them all.

Until next time...
Giggles,
Mrs. D.
