Relay for Life

Education and Prevention

Our area American Cancer Society Relay for Life representatives held a fun afternoon "Mini-Relay for Life" in our school play yard.  The goal was to educate the student body about how to keep themselves healthy and learn some skills that will help prevent cancer.  The munchkins had a great time and came away with some fantastic information.

One station had the munchkins answering questions regarding proper eating and nutrition.  If the question was answered correctly, they received a pencil.  If the question was answered wrong...oh, oh!  The munchkin had to role the dice and perform the noted exercise before receiving their prize.

I think the munchkins had more fun answering the questions wrong so that they could exercise!

Another station taught the munchkins about protecting their skin from the sun, even on a cloudy or in the winter.  They learned about three things they should remember:  Slip, slap, slop.
Slip on a shirt.
Slap on a hat.
Slop on sunscreen.

They created bracelets with UV sensitive beads.  Anytime they need to "slip, slap, slop", the beads turn colors.  If they are safe from the suns rays, the beads stay white.  The munchkins thought it was magic, but it really made the message clear...anytime we're in the sun, we need to protect our skin!

And the last station was probably the neatest, but only some of the munchkins wanted to visit it (because it was a little gross!)
This station taught about the effects of smoke on our lungs and it used a real pig's lung to illustrate a healthy lung and a sick lung.  The munchkins could even "blow them up" and touch them (wearing gloves, of course).
Yuck!

It was a very interesting day and we were very thankful for the wonderful volunteers from the American Cancer Society for providing such a fun afternoon!

Until next time...
Giggles,
Mrs. D.
