The Chicka Boom Room

Welcome
to the
 Chicka Chicka Boom Room!

Our September focus is always so much fun as we explore all there is to know about letters and letter sounds with the fun story by Bill Martin:  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

We started by transforming the kindergarten room into the Chicka Boom Room, complete with a palm tree and the mischievous letters right outside our classroom door.  All the munchkins had their picture taken in front of the tree to add to a class book that we made.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Look who's in our room!

Then we created a Chicka Boom Bag.  We used it all throughout our unit, adding all the fun games and activities as we learned.

Then we got busy!

Letters, Letters, Letters

Our main focus with this story was, of course, the letters!  The munchkins had a great time searching for the lost letters in our sand box, ordering them and then hiding them again for their friends to find.  I'm not sure Mr. Bill who vacuums the floor had as much fun, but what can we say?  Learning can be messy!

We also had some fun creating our own mini coconut trees for the letters to climb.  It's always a hit when the paint tubs come out, so painting the tree trunk with chocolate brown paint was definitely the favorite part of this project.  Tracing and cutting the hand print leaves...not so much!  It was quite a challenge to keep all five fingers connected.  But the fun continued as we got out the alphabet sticker sheets, adding as many letters as we could squeeze onto the tree.  Many of the munchkins even formed some of the words we have been working on.  We had lots of trees full of "to", "we", "is" and "this".  Great idea, munchkins!

These finished projects looked great on our back wall!

We got the paints out for another project, as the munchkins painted wooden mini-trees and wrote sentence strips about them to further practice some of those words we are working on.  The munchkins did a great job with the sentence: This is my tree.

Our escapades with reading continued at our centers with lots of opportunities to use the pocket chart and pointer, adding letters to the blow up coconut tree while practicing the repetitive text from the story.

Here comes "P" up the coconut tree!

But probably the most fun during center time was had at our listening center.  The munchkins loved to visit and here Ray Charles retell the story in his classic voice!
Chicka! Chicka! BOOM! BOOM!

Patterns and Plants
Our Chicka Chicka unit was a fun way to reinforce all we know about patterns, plus learn a bit about plants, as well!  The munchkins had fun making rug patterns with our magnetic letters, marble coconuts and foam trees and then transferring those patterns to paper for our bulletin board.

The biggest pattern ever!
And then we took some time to explore all the parts of a plant...the coconut tree as our main focus.  The munchkins did a great job learning the four main parts and why they are important.

Putting together our Plant Parts Floor Puzzle at center time...

...and making our own, too!

And Don't Forget the Food!
The favorite part of any unit is always Wednesday Recipe Day!  This unit was no exception, as the munchkins pieced together lots of yummy goodies to create an edible coconut tree like no other.

Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom!
Until next time...

Homecoming 2010

A Happy Homecoming!

We had a great time Friday afternoon at the Homecoming Parade. We shared our corner with the first grade and the preschool as we watched and waited for the festivities to begin.

Finally!  Here it comes!

A salute to Old Glory!  How precious is that?!

We were so excited when we finally saw Father.  (Or was it because we saw Betsy Ann?)  We had so much fun when our float came by.  We got to see all our junior high friends, plus Mr. B and they all had lots of treats saved just for us!

The munchkins were so patient as the candy accumulated...

...and then...

We filled our basket to the top!  It will be a fun job to sort, graph and count all the pieces come Monday morning.  Then, of course, we get to fair share it ALL and take it home!  YUM!

Until next time...

Honoring Our Lady of Sorrows

A Morning With Mary
Father Don arranged for a beautiful Eucharistic Procession to honor Our Lady of Sorrows and the munchkins were very intrigued by this new experience. They were all so reverent and truly in awe of what was taking place as we all walked with Jesus from the school chapel into our church.

We all spent a few moments in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at our side alter where our church as its devotional area to Our Lady of Sorrows. Father then blessed all the munchkins and we processed back to the church. It was a beautiful way to start our day.
Once we returned to our classroom, the munchkins were very excited to create a project in honor of Our Lady of Sorrows as well.

Seven swords, one for each of Mary's seven sorrows, piercing her beautiful heart.

Our Lady of Sorrows, Pray for Us!
Until next time...

Sealed With a Kiss

Sealed with a Kiss!

Our opening unit is always so much fun. The munchkins so enjoy getting to know Chester the Raccoon and his family & friends with the Audrey Penn story
The Kissing Hand.
We also added some extra fun throughout our first three weeks with two of the follow-up stories:
A Pocket Full of Kisses and Chester Raccoon and the Big, Bad Bully.

Our First Day
We started our unit on the very first day of school. Chester helped us explore our feelings of being at school and away from Mom and Dad. For our first activity, the munchkins completed the sentence:
On my first day, I felt __________.
We cut out our hand prints and added heart (kiss) to the center.
We compiled all our pages together for a cute keepsake until the end of the year.

Getting to Know Chester

Everyone had a great time as the weeks continued. These are the mini "Chesters" that we hung in our front window.
But that's not all!

Math and More!
Counting, Graphing & Directionality

This unit gave us several opportunities to explore some of our math concepts.

The munchkins worked hard with their counting skills using Chester Counting Cards. Each card had a number. The munchkins counted out "kisses" to match the number on each card.

We used a probability spinner to with pictures from the story on it. Each munchkin had a chance to spin. What will it be? Maybe a kiss...maybe a hand...maybe the heart or Chester himself! Each of the spins was represented with a picture card on a floor graph. The munchkins did a great job analyzing the graph by counting each column and comparing the rows for greatest and least. Then, last of all, the munchkins transferred the floor graph onto a take home graph of their own. They did a fantastic job!

And then there was our little Chester mask. It looks more like art than math, but with nine different sizes of hearts, each turned or flipped in a different direction in order to make a raccoon face, it becomes quite a project on directionality (not to mention following verbal directions!). They turned out so cute and the munchkins did a great job listening.

Reading, Writing & Fun

Chester's unit was a fantastic opportunity for us to dive right in to reading and writing. The munchkins ate it up!

We focused on several beginning of the year sight words:

I, like, the, this, is, my, see
We used our pocket chart with the sight word sentence: This is ______'s hand. The munchkins traced their hands so we could practice name recognition. It was a great exercise in learning each others names in print and practicing one-to-one-correspondence. Then we created a class book using the same sight word sentence. Everyone will have a chance to take the book home and read it with their families.

Our second pocket chart reinforced more sight words using: I see the ______. This time we connected picture clues with phonic clues to determine the word in the blank. The munchkins did a fabulous job with that too! We took it a bit further by using those simple sight words to practice some guided writing.

The munchkins wrote: I see Chester.

What a great opportunity to work on letter placement & form, spelling & phonics and that all important /ch/ sound!

And we can't forget about the fun "Chester's Pockets" we made, which we filled with all sorts of patterning, sorting and reading activities to do during transitions times in class. At the end of our unit, the munchkins couldn't wait to take them home and show off their new skills to Mom and Dad!

Fun with Food

No unit is ever complete until we've had a recipe day! The munchkins loved creating "Kissing Hand" sandwiches (and, of course, eating them!).

YUM!

A Kiss Good-Bye

We were sad to see our Kissing Hand unit end and I am definitely sad to see all my little Chesters head out the door...but...

What do we have in store for the next few weeks?

Check back to see our September fun in the Chicka Chicka Boom Room!
